Holiday Security and Safety Tips

In this blog entry, the Myrtle Beach residential locksmith and Myrtle Beach commercial locksmith experts here at Myrtle Beach Locksmith will detail some useful holiday security and safety tips.

Create the Appearance of Home Occupation

Burglars often scope out neighborhoods before attempting to break into a home. They ideally want to find an unoccupied home, or figure out what time of day a home will likely be unoccupied so they can attempt coming in through a window or break the locks. We recommend creating the appearance that somebody is home by putting lights and televisions on randomized timers to turn on and off at different times of day or night.

Front Door Locks

Make sure that all points of entry to your home are fully secured before you leave for even a short bit of time. This includes locking doors, locking windows, and ensuring that all window well covers are locked. If you have a garage door make sure it is disabled and locked on the inside. You can place a safety bar or wooden dowel inside the track of a sliding glass door in order to stop someone from force opening the locks.

Strong Locks

Make sure that there’s a Grade 1 high security deadbolt lock installed on your front door. If you have a standard lock consider upgrading to a high security lock or a smart door lock. Smart locks allow you to keep a close eye on all activities within your home’s entry points using a centralized mobile application, which allows you to grant temporary access at certain times of day for workers, housekeepers, or deliveries.

Additional Holiday Security and Safety Tips for When You’re Away

  • Ensure that the basement’s sump pump is fully operational
  • Unplug all electronic appliances and devices to lower the risk of an electrical fire or power surge

If you’re away during a cold spell, keep your thermostat at at least 55 degrees fahrenheit

Look at your homeowner’s insurance policy for more information regarding potential coverage if a burglary occurs.
